There's a new genre in town...

Anyone who knows me knows that I love movies, especially scary movies. Ever since I was little, scary movies have kept me up all night, made my skin crawl, and given me a thrill ride that no coaster can come close to.

The newest trend in horror movies appears to be torture. Torture films aim to gross the viewer out beyond all reason. They use the most realistic, graphic, disturbing, over-the-top special effects and show it all. Nothing is left to the imagination.

You know the movies: Hostel, Saw, Wolf Creek, House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, High Tension.

What's the big deal, you may wonder. Well, quite simply, it's this: These movies aren't usually very scary. Sure, they are frighteningly sick, but disgusting doesn't equal scary.

The "fun" of a horror movie is in the fright factor, whether it's psychologically scary or just plain jump in your seat scary. There is no fun in feeling so queasy that you actually pass out. There is no fun in having to miss half of a movie because you're trying to hide your eyes.

In the end, you don't end up being scared. You just feel like one of the many tortured characters- sliced and diced, filleted and disembowled, chewed up and spit out.
