We survived "Kids' Camp!!!"
The Weidenfeld ladies just returned from five days up in the San Bernardino mountains. Our church, Green Valley Christian Center, participates in a Christian camp for kids aged 8-12 every summer. This year, both Hannah and Eva wanted to go, but they were a lil' nervous about being away from Mom and Dad for so long. Well, okay...Mom and Dad were also a wee bit anxious about having our babies away from us for five whole days! So, Mom signed up to go along as a counselor.
We left on the morning of Monday, July 11th. Our church had about 75 children attend. We had a pretty easy drive to San Bernardino, and then it came....the hour-long trek to the top of the mountain. It was nauseating, scary, and steep. But we made it in one piece!
The camp is called Pinecrest Christian Conference Center. It was built in the 1950's but has been renovated and modernized somewhat. Several other churches also attended the same week we were there. Our church was the only one from out of state. In total, there were about 250 kids at camp.
We were all kept busy each day, with breakfast starting at 7:45 and lights out at 9:45. We had anticipated cooler evenings, but it was pretty much hot the whole time. Our days were filled with small group Bible studies each morning, an a.m. chapel service, all of the usual "camp activites" (such as fishing, archery, swimming, hiking, laser tag, skateboarding, crafts, drama, and so on....), an evening service, and plenty of free time. There was a family of missionaries from Costa Rica that spoke at each evening service. They were quite motivating and very entertaining!
After checkout Friday morning, we loaded back onto the buses and headed for home. Again, the trip back down the mountain was nauseating, scary, and steep. The second bus (the one we weren't on) lost its air conditioning around Barstow. Another bus had to meet us in Primm so that a switch could be made. We were all very thankful to be on the bus we were on! The temperature outside was 119 degreees! That's the desert for you.
By 5:45 p.m. we pulled into the church parking lot and were greeted by a mob of excited/worried parents. After all of the good-bye's and can't-wait-till-next-year's, we saw Rob in the distance and ran to him. The girls and I were so happy to be home! We had made it! We actually survived our first-ever experience away at camp.
